BUILDING A HEALTHIER FUTURE FOR WA KIDS

The Stan Perron Charitable Foundation has announced funding for 14 research initiatives as part of its latest round of Health Research Grants.

Chair of the Foundation, Elizabeth Perron said the selection of the successful applicants came after a rigorous evaluation process by the Foundation’s Health Research Advisory Panel.

“The Foundation Board then considered the advice of the expert panel in making the final decision,” Elizabeth said.

“In total, in this latest round, the Foundation has committed $7.2 million, which is on top of previous commitments specifically targeting health research in Western Australia.

“In line with our Founder’s Statement, we seek to fund work which contributes to the ultimate health and wellbeing of young Western Australians, particularly through exploring and addressing the root causes of illness.

“The core focus of this latest round of grants was providing financial support to the people and platforms that ultimately make research possible.

“This recognises the reality that ultimately successful research requires highly trained and talented people as well as specialist tools and resources to assist them in achieving their objectives.”

The applications funded this year include:

  • The development of new therapies to prevent ear infections in WA children.

  • A project exploring the use of artificial intelligence to discover new treatments and faster diagnoses for childhood illness.

  • The acquisition of a state-of-the-art multi-photon microscope to examine brain development across childhood and adolescence.

  • A study investigating the lifelong impact of the human microbiome during the first 1000 days of a child’s life.

  • An Aboriginal-led translational research program aimed at improving health outcomes for indigenous Western Australian families.

  • Research into the mechanisms of, and new treatments for, childhood inherited retinal diseases.

  • A collaborative research platform for investigating the immune responses of children and adolescents receiving vaccines for COVID-19.
