FOODBANK BUNBURY: A NEW HOME FOR CONNECTION, SUPPORT AND FOOD RELIEF

Across Australia, food insecurity continues to affect millions of households.

Last year alone, Foodbank sourced enough food to provide 92 million meals — a figure expected to rise as cost-of-living pressures persist.

Now in its 13th year, the Foodbank Hunger Report reveals the scale of the challenge, with one in three households — around 3.5 million nationally — experiencing uncertainty about where their next meal will come from.

Western Australia is home to six Foodbank branches, with the Bunbury site playing a critical role in supporting families across the South West. Currently assisting an average of 184 clients each day, demand at the Bunbury branch is projected to increase by 90 per cent, reaching up to 350 daily clients by 2030.

However, the existing facility is no longer fit for purpose and its lease is soon to expire, prompting the need for a new, long-term solution.

To meet this growing demand, Foodbank WA has announced plans for a new purpose-built South West service hub at Dalyellup Beach Estate, located close to the current site.

More than a food distribution centre, the new facility is designed as a welcoming community hub that brings food relief together with integrated support services under one roof.

The new hub will be co-located with Youth Focus, which provides mental health support for young people, and the Financial Wellbeing Collective, which supported more than 48,000 Western Australians last year in navigating financial hardship and stress.

The Integrated Wrap-Around Services Model will provide accessible, dignified support for children, youth, adults and families, enabling early intervention, reducing social isolation and supporting Aboriginal communities through culturally responsive engagement. The Stan Perron Charitable Foundation has confirmed its support for the delivery of these integrated services at the new Dalyellup facility, helping to bring Foodbank’s vision for the South West to life, with funding directed to service delivery.

Foodbank WA Head of Fundraising and Partnerships, Ian de Nazareth, said the project marks a significant milestone for services in the region.

“The new branch marks the start of a new era for Foodbank services in the South West, delivered in collaboration with Youth Focus and the Financial Wellbeing Collective.”

Construction will commence shortly on the purpose-built Foodbank Dalyellup facility, made possible through a collaborative funding effort led by the State Government and supported by corporate and philanthropic partners.

Community Services Minister Matthew Swinbourn said the project demonstrates the power of collaboration.

“Foodbank does remarkable work, day in, day out, providing groceries and meals to those Western Australians doing it tough.

“This project is a great example of the magic that happens when non-government organisations, philanthropic and corporate sectors all pull together towards a common goal.”

Bunbury MLA Don Punch highlighted the importance of locally delivered integrated support.

“This new Foodbank facility will be a game-changer for Bunbury. It means more support for locals, delivered close to home. By bringing food relief together with mental health and financial counselling, we’re giving people not just a meal, but the tools to get back on their feet.”

Through its support of the Integrated Wrap-Around Services Model, the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation is proud to partner with Foodbank WA and its collaborators to help create a place of dignity, connection and care — ensuring families across the South West can access not only food relief, but the support they need to regain stability and build a stronger future.
